Aldesa to complete the first stage of modernization of Elk-Korsze line

Aldesa - Aldesa to complete the first stage of modernization of Elk-Korsze line

As of 18 June 2025, rail services between Ełk and Giżycko have resumed. This milestone marks the completion of the first stage of the modernisation and electrification of railway line no. 38, carried out by a consortium led by Aldesa Polska. The project is co-financed by the European Union under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme (IEOP).

The reconstruction of the single-track Ełk–Korsze railway line is one of the key infrastructure projects in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Commissioned by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A., the investment is set to improve regional transport accessibility, reduce travel times, and enhance passenger comfort. Completion of the first stage has enabled the restoration of train services on the 49 km section between Ełk and Giżycko.

To enhance comfort for passengers, platforms were rebuilt at three stations – Giżycko, Wydminy and Stare Juchy – and at two stops – Woszczele and Siedliska (where construction works are still in progress). The entire 49-kilometre section has been completely rebuilt, including full track replacement and the modernisation of 59 engineering structures, such as bridges, viaducts and culverts.

The line is now equipped with state-of-the-art railway traffic control systems, ensuring the efficient and safe movement of trains. At the same time, rail-road safety has been significantly improved – with 26 level crossings and pedestrian crossings upgraded, and two new grade-separated crossings constructed in Giżycko and Wydminy.

In Giżycko, a new underpass beneath the tracks has been built near Unii Europejskiej Street, allowing pedestrians safe access to local amenities including the municipal beach.

The works are being carried out by a consortium comprising: Aldesa Construcciones Polska Sp. z o.o. (lead partner), Aldesa Construcciones S.A., Coalvi S.A. and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.

The value of the modernisation works on the Ełk–Korsze line is PLN 649 million net (PLN 798 million gross), of which PLN 499 million net is financed by the European Union under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme. This funding has made it possible to implement a project of strategic importance for the region and the wider transport system of north-eastern Poland.

Upon completion of the full modernisation and electrification, passenger trains will be able to run at speeds of up to 160 km/h, while freight trains will reach speeds of up to 120 km/h. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2026.
